Abstract

Terrains and landscapes have played an important role in Computer Graphics for nearly thirty years. However, their modeling still presents an open problem. Real world terrains are influenced by various effects from which the water erosion is probably the most important one. Landscapes are formed by the road system that defines shapes of cities and urban areas, by plan ecosystems that influence the landscape at all scales, by water bodies, etc. In this presentation we will show an overview of terrain and landscape modeling techniques. We will show approaches to populate terrains with urban areas, interactive ecosystem modeling, hydraulic erosion, plant interaction with environments and how these all multi-layered modeling techniques of various phenomena could yield to a unified terrain modeling system. The presentation will focus both interactive and off-line modeling as well as modeling on different scales.
